Thanks to the Antarctic Treaty, participating countries have resisted the temptation of using Antarctica for commercial or nuclear activities and have maintained it as a borderless region used purely for scientific activities. Some research facilities see the arrival of visitors as a sort of encroachment on their territory while at many other locations they actually encourage such visits.
Argentina’s Esperanza station, a small town of orange pre-fabricated bungalows scattered over a frozen plain at Hope Bay, lets tourists wander through recreational and work areas, a church and school. Resident meteorologists, military personnel, children, team dogs, and penguins, are friendly and accommodating.
On King George’s Island, Chile has its Teniente Marsh station which happens to be the biggest bas on that island and, surprisingly, has a post office besides a restaurant and a convenience store. China’s Great Wall Station offers tourists the chance to buy things like T-shirts, stuffed penguins and other souvenirs. The United States’ Palmer Station grants permission only to certain ships permission to dock near its base at Anvers Island and, that too, at specified times only. Living quarters and research units are some places which visitors never get to see.
